Why Roofing and Siding Should Be Done Together
The place where your roof meets your walls is the most leak-prone area on any house. Step flashing, counter-flashing, kickout diverters, and ice and water shield all live at the roof-to-wall junction. When a roofer does the roof and a siding contractor does the siding separately, the flashing handoff between the two trades is where things go wrong.
When we do both, there is no handoff. Our crew installs the step flashing during the roofing phase and ties the siding into it during the siding phase. One crew, one plan, one warranty.
Cost savings. When roofing and siding are done together, we save on staging, dumpster, and crew mobilization. That savings passes to you — typically 5-10% less than hiring two separate contractors.
Timeline savings. Instead of two separate projects spanning two separate weeks, a combined roof-and-side job typically adds only 3-5 days to a standalone roof replacement.
Siding We Install
Vinyl Siding
CertainTeed and Mastic premium vinyl with insulated options. The workhorse material for most Long Island homes. 25-40 year lifespan, minimal maintenance, lifetime manufacturer warranty.
Typical cost (2,000 sqft exterior): $14,500 - $28,000
James Hardie Fiber Cement
The premium pick. Fire-resistant, rot-proof, 40-50 year lifespan. Factory-baked ColorPlus finish with a 15-year warranty. We install HardiePlank, HardieShingle, and HardieTrim.
Typical cost (2,000 sqft exterior): $32,000 - $62,000
Cedar Shake
Real Western Red Cedar or engineered cedar from Maibec. For homeowners who want traditional character. Cedar requires more maintenance than vinyl or Hardie but looks like nothing else on a Long Island colonial.
Typical cost (2,000 sqft exterior): $28,000 - $72,000
Siding Repair Services
We repair siding damage alongside roofing work or as standalone jobs:
- Storm damage: Tree limbs, wind, hail. We match existing siding color and profile.
- Water damage: Rotted sheathing behind failed siding, usually caused by flashing failure at the roofline. We fix the flashing first, then the siding.
- Panel replacement: Individual panels cracked, warped, or faded. We carry the most common LI siding colors on the truck.
- Insurance claims: We document siding damage and work with your adjuster alongside any roof claim.
Typical repair cost: $350 - $3,500 depending on scope.
Why the Roof-to-Wall Detail Matters Most
This is where most exterior failures happen on Long Island homes. Water runs down the roof, hits the wall junction, and needs to be diverted into the gutter by a kickout diverter and step flashing. When this detail is wrong, water goes behind the siding, rots the sheathing, grows mold in the wall cavity, and you do not know it until the damage is extensive.
We install:
- Step flashing at every course where shingle meets wall
- Kickout diverters at every roof-to-wall terminus above a gutter
- Ice and water shield behind the step flashing for redundancy
- Proper J-channel or trim integration so the siding sits over the flashing without pinching or blocking drainage
This detail takes an extra hour per junction. Most contractors skip it. We never do.
